Åpningsfilm / Opening movie

NANOOK OF THE NORTH – A STORY OF LIFE AND LOVE IN THE ACTUAL ARCTIC

NANOOK OF THE NORTH is the story of Nanook, Nyla, Cunayou, Comock – an Inuit family living in the Hudson Bay area of Canada. The climate is harsh, and the question of daily survival is their main concern. With great sympathy filmmaker Robert J. Flaherty tells a gripping story about the people, their lives, about love.

The film was an enormous success in movie theaters all over the world when it opened in 1922. The magnificent, austere landscape of snow and ice, combined with great camera work (groundbreaking at the time) and the warm, humoristic story, makes NANOOK OF THE NORTH a wonderful film experience for all ages. With live accompaniment by Matti Bye Ensemble, it is transformed into an amazing experience. The music for NANOOK OF THE NORTH was commissioned by the Tromsø International Film Festival, and had its world premiere at the festival in 2010 at an outdoor screening on the Town Square, on the festival’s snow screen.

DIRECTOR
Robert J. Flaherty (1884 – 1951) is often proclaimed to be one of the founding fathers of documentary film, and NANOOK OF THE NORTH is often referred to as the first feature-length documentary film. In fact, many of the scenes in NANOOK are staged, and reflect a traditional lifestyle that already had been abandoned at the time of shooting, but this became the starting point for an ongoing discussion of the question of authenticity vs. falsehood in documentary filmmaking.
